Lijiang's old town gets photographed constantly, but usually at street level. I went higher to get the rooflines — that layering of grey tile is what defines the place architecturally. What made this particular evening work was the storm moving in just as the lantern lights came on, that warm orange pushing back against the cold sky. The tension between the two is what I was after. The red lanterns in the foreground keep it grounded in the present.
